'Psych' star due in S.A.

Chances are you may be seeing James Roday, star of "Psych" on the USA Network, around town in December.

On the show, the San Antonio native plays naughty police consultant Shawn Spencer, who solves crimes using powers of observation so acute that the precinct detectives think he's psychic.

Roday, born James Roday Rodriguez and a 1994 graduate of Taft High, told me recently that he loves heading back to Texas for the holidays.

He usually visits his grandparents in Bridgeport and joins a close friend of his in San Antonio.

Good place to find Roday: Pappasito's Cantina (on Interstate 10 West at Huebner Road), the actor's all-time favorite place to eat.

"I live and breathe for Pappasito's," he told me during an interview in Beverly Hills. "Last trip, I went straight from the airport to eat there. I just love their sour cream chicken enchiladas."

Incidentally, fans of "Psych" shouldn't miss this year's holiday episode (9 p.m. Nov. 28 on USA) where Shawn and his pal Gus (Dulé Hill) solve a horrendous crime involving Santa and keep you laughing all the way through the danger.

Hey, you might want to make an evening of it and also watch the Christmas episode of "Monk" (8 p.m. Nov. 28 on USA) in which the fastidious detective whines and grimaces as he helps three grimy homeless men investigate the murder of their friend.

Recently, Roday and Dulé MC'ed a charity dinner, as well as took a few shots at USA Network President Bonnie Hammer. Multichannel has a small snippet about it in their "Through the Wire" article.

Psych stars James Roday and Dulé Hill took on what could be a prickly assignment last week: serve as the comedic masters of ceremonies for a charity dinner and take jabs at their boss, Bonnie Hammer.

Some of their material, as Hammer was honored by the Anti-Defamation League in Los Angeles, worked. They cracked that Hammer’s biographic reel had been made in Vancouver “to save a little money” and called Hammer “the original Salt from Salt n’ Pepa.”

Other lines were true groaners, like their assertion that they were last-minute replacements for the original emcees, Michael Richards and Isaiah Washington. Good thing their USA series provides them with solid day jobs.

But they set the tone for the night: a light-hearted tribute to Hammer, who was honored for championing social campaigns such as “Characters United” and “Erase the Hate.” She gave a gracious shout-out to former USA honcho Kay Koplovitz for giving her the chance to launch “Erase the Hate” 10 years ago.

Hammer, in turn, was praised by Universal Studios president and chief operating officer Ron Meyer, who attended the June 3 dinner in spite of the challenges he faced last week as his facility was mopped up after a multimillion-dollar fire.

One of the challenges to an event like this: having the honoree sit through his or her bio tape, or as Hammer called it “the life, the times and the hair of Bonnie Hammer.” (She had a pretty poufy curly ’do during her stint in the original production crew of This Old House, when she worked with Bob Vila.)

But she soldiered on, leaving the group with a solid message: People aren’t born hating others, they are taught.

ACED Season 3 Preview

ACED wrote up a very nice article talking about Season 3. It's dated as being a week old, but the content suggests that it may even be older than that.

For months, since the season finale aired in February, fans of the hit television series Psych have been waiting impatiently to find out just what in the world is up with that? For two whole seasons, as far as we know, Shawn and Henry Spencer were the only two members of the Spencer family we needed to be concerned about...and then one word comes along and shakes up our whole world. At least until next season. Networks like USA are good at crafting cliffhangers like these just to leave us hanging on a hook until we can know...because we have to know. Of course by the time we find out, they've already reeled us in.

When ACED caught up with Psych's James Roday (Shawn Spencer) and Dule Hill (Gus), thinking we could put the squeeze on the two actors, it turned out they were just as clueless as we are; though quite fun to chat with. Or was their talk of bonding through 80s-baby nostalgia a clever way to distract us? We did manage to catch a few tidbits of info on the "Spencer mom", casting, and the fate of Police Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson) - just in time for the season three air date this coming July.

James Roday is a friendly guy, and pretty much an open book. He seems just as excitable as we hoped he'd be about getting back into the swing of things with a brand new season of the critically acclaimed series centering on his character, Shawn, a young police consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department whose ‘heightened observational skills' and impressive detective instincts allow him to convince people that he is a psychic.
